American Buffalo - Mamet’s Beautiful Dialog

Rented this one from the library on video. Interesting looking cast, and I read on the back of the box that David Mamet wrote the screenplay based on his play. I thought it was a pretty decent adaptation, although it could have used a little more outside exposition to help it not seem so 'stagebound'. Great performances by all three main characters, especially Dennis Franz, who is usually stuck with much less interesting roles.

In a nutshell, the story is about a trio of inner city losers who plan a grudge heist over getting ripped off of a valuable American Buffalo nickel, and petty jealousies, interpersonal differences and misunderstandings explode into tragedy all taking place in one afternoon in a low-rent second hand store. The big star here is the script and the performances, so don't expect much in the way of action or plot.

Brooklyn Rules [2007]

Starring: Freddie Prinze Jr., Scott Caan, Jerry Ferrara, Alec Baldwin, Mena Suvari and Monica Keena.

Genre: Crime

Brooklyn Rules is a coming-of-age film about three best friends growing up in a rough and crime ridden area. Its reminiscent of films from days gone by. It has the very familiar style we've come to expect from crime films set in New York. Its predictable, typically cliched and very samey. The plot is simple enough and nothing will surprise you. Brooklyn Rules is an easy watch with no over the top swearing, violence or anything else of the sort.

There are some good performances. The cast is likable and sometimes lovable. Funny moments are suitably placed amongst the drama to stop the film getting bogged down. After all a coming-of-age film can't be too serious. More casual viewers mightn't find enough to be thoroughly entertained. Brooklyn Rules is probably better suited to those who are a fan of the genre and the style. With that in mind its still a very watchable and well directed low budget production.

THE LATE PASS: OUTSIDE PROVIDENCE (1999)

Starring: Shawn Hatosy, Amy Smart, Alec Baldwin

Strange poster, reminiscent of Get Over It (pre-dating it, mind) yet is a complete misrepresentation of Outside Providence.

This 70's set "comedy" follows Tim, a stoner from a broken home an attraction to trouble. But when his blue-collar dad enrolls him in a snotty prep school, Tim finds himself out of place, outclassed and seriously outnumbered.

Michael Corrente's film, complete with stock-70's soundtrack, tries so hard to be a coming-of-age story ala Dazed and Confused, yet it suffers from a crippling problem.

It has nothing interesting to say or to show, it merely exists for 90 mins. Sharing the blame is Corrente himself, whose direction is stilted and uninspiring, whilst star Shawn Hatosy is a blank slate, a character without any characteristics or, well, any kind of personality at all. He's flanked by a rag-tag group of actors that do their best Spiccoli impressions for the camera and a love interest in Amy Smart that "just wants to challenge herself". It's a shame that didn't extend to her performance, I've seen more life in packet of monster munch than in Smart's lackadaisical Jane.

Even the name, Jane, doesn't inspire or excite.

Plain Jane.

The only actor to come out of the film with a sense of accomplishment is Alec Baldwin, as Tim's old-fashioned, hard-ass dad, but even Baldwin's performance wears thin by the 40th time he calls his son "Dildo".

For all of these faults, Outside Providence isn't a bad film, it's just not very good either and I got the impression that it's happy just being that. It's incredibly disappointing when you consider Peter Farrelly was involved, remember this was 1999, when The Farrelly's were on a mean streak, yet this movie gives a terrifying snapshot of what was to come.

No bad movies, simply adequate ones.

I can't recommend Outside Providence, despite it's great soundtrack (cribbed from Dazed and Confused) and the appearance of a three-legged dog, the film's complete lack of ambition and sheer "beige-ness" leads me to call it out as a bit of a waste of time, and time is a precious commodity.

Just ask Justin Timberlake.
