The saying “Old age and treachery always triumph over youth and a smart mouth” is attributed to Oscar Wilde in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 2, but it’s actually a misquote of something said by the playwright David Mamet (among others), “Old age and treachery will always beat youth and exuberance.” The term “smart mouth” originated in the 1960’s, decades after Oscar Wilde died in 1900. So it’s not only a misquote and a misattribution, it’s an anachronism (not a term that was used by Wilde or anyone else in the Victorian era). I can understand why Star Trek might want to honor Oscar Wilde, and I sincerely love Tig Notaro and her character Jett Reno (who made the misquote) — but it bothers the shit out of me that no one at CBS, Paramount, or the Star Trek organization could be bothered to do a 30-second Google search to make sure they got her dialogue right. It does not fill me with confidence in the writers of this new show.
