OUTLANDER (2020) 04 502 Bust.
Later that night, Jamie stealthily made his way back to the gaol so he could carry out his plan of liberating the 2 Regulator prisoners. They would surely tell Murtagh what had happened, but Jamie did not want to see them hanged and that outweighed the bad. He watched men remove the body of the murdered Regulator, armed himself with an iron wedge, waited for his chance. It soon came when all was quiet; he went in the open door and quickly found the cells. Murtagh's men weren't exactly pleased to see him, still thought he had betrayed them. Jamie assured them he hadn't, and also said what they did was wrong too. He told them he wanted to save lives, same as he told Lt. Knox, didn't care if their idea of nobility was different than his. Using the flat iron, Jamie forced the door open, then checked again to see if the way was clear. The Redcoats had posted guards. Then the 2 Regulators told Jamie the last thing he wanted to hear: Murtagh had been directly part of this violent lawlessness. "Tell him not to return," Jamie said grimly. "Knox has an army." But these farmers were not meek. They had been trodden down long enough, and were ready to do battle with an army of their own. They told Jamie more of the Regulators' plans than he'd heard before and it was frightful. With those parting words, they left Jamie and cleanly made their escape.
"There may yet be more traitors in town," Lt. Knox said as he and Mr. Fanning examined the broken lock, clearly snapped from the door’s outside. Jamie, trying to look disapproving, suggested Mr. Fanning make more inquiries. Lt. Knox felt war was inevitable. "'One man fighting for his home is worth a hundred fighting for pay'," he began the quote and Jamie finished it. Jamie made to leave but was stopped by Knox's words: "You need more men." His oath to King and country would now require him to raise a militia. The few men at the gathering would not be enough, Knox said: Jamie needed to return to Hillsborough prepared for a war.

MY FAIR LADY UK TOUR (2022)
OUTLANDER (2020) 02 502 Hillsborough.
Make no mistake - though he told Lt. Hamilton Knox of His Majesty's Army careful words about the Regulators to maintain his alliance with colony Governor Tryon and the Crown - Jamie's sympathies lay entirely with the people of Fraser's Ridge whom he'd sworn to defend, Murtagh, his band of Scottish insurgents, and any man who could not afford to eat. It's Murtagh's violent methods of which Jamie didn't approve, though he knew Murtagh had never been much of a diplomat. He had to ride this very fine line of loyalties. Out of the woods, a man rode up and reported 3 of the Regulators had been captured after attacking townsfolk. Jamie was suddenly afraid one of them was Murtagh, whom Lt. Knox was eager to get.
"This is what a world without civility looks like," Lt. Knox said as they rode into the scene of the Regulators' latest mayhem: the small town of Hillsborough. Almost immediately Jamie saw a man he knew from Governor Tryon's acquaintence, Mr. Edmund Fanning. He went straight to him, introduced Knox, and was told what had happened. No one had been killed, but there had been injuries from hot tar and feathering, and destruction of property which Jamie plainly saw. Fanning, who knew her skill, wished Claire had also come, to tend to the badly wounded. Lt. Knox was as outraged as a British soldier could get, wanted immediate retribution on the 3 prisoners. Jamie was angry but relieved to learn Murtagh had not been captured. Despite his anger at their level of violence, Jamie tried to mediate between the Regulator men, whom he knew and they knew him, and Crown officer Lt. Knox. But before he could stop it, Knox ran his sword through one fiercely defiant Regulator prisoner who had spat on him, killing him. Now the real damage was done. Murtagh's war would escalate unless Jamie could mitigate this awful deed.

OUTLANDER (2020) 03 505 Mercy.
"Maybe it's for the best," Jamie said, after reading Governor Tryon's letter outlining pardons for all the Regulator leaders. Redcoat Lt. Knox was not happy about it, especially after outright murdering a Regulator prisoner. "Every man deserves a second chance," Jamie counselled. Knox worried his heinous action would've been for nothing. "You must ask the Lord's forgiveness and receive it," Jamie added, meaning God. "Trust me. There will be other battles to fight." He stood up, took his ale, and went to have a closer look at Murtagh's WANTED poster. Inwardly, he was seething, but perhaps Tryon would actually do this mercy. Knox said he was glad Jamie was his friend and confidante. Then Knox dropped a shocking statement: he had sent for the post-Culloden Ardsmuir prisoner rolls from Scotland, so he could perhaps find out who in the area was giving Murtagh shelter, find him. If Knox read that document, it would reveal Jamie to be one of them. Anger suddenly turned to gut wrenching fear. All that Jamie had built for his family and friends here in the British colony could be lost on one written line. No stone unturned, said Knox, and held out a knife. After saying throwing knives at the paper was barbaric, he invited Jamie to take a shot at piercing his godfather Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser's image with it. Redcoats- Scottish Highlander enemies- shouted encouragement. Decades of anger sharply rose again, mixing with the terrible fear. Jamie took aim, and made sure he cleanly missed. Another target had presented himself.

OUTLANDER (2020) 02 505 Wanted.
Lieutenant Hamilton Knox's Redcoat platoon was lounging in Hillsborough's tavern and inn, waiting to see what would happen next with the Regulators. Jamie walked in on quite a merry gathering, if the flowing ale and laughter was any indication. His men should have no less- he ordered a barrel of rum for the militia. A very casually dressed Knox in good spirits spotted and hailed him, "Did I not tell you the Colonel would arrive as promised? And with daylight to spare." Jamie greeted him formally, said he brought about 50 more men. He accepted an invitation to drink some ale, then spotted a WANTED broadsheet on the wall behind Knox that had a fairly good drawing of Murtagh on it. The Redcoats had been having some entertainment, judging by the knife marks in the paper. Knox realised Jamie had seen the marks, "A little barbaric, I know," and Jamie merely looked noncommittant. He had already witnessed worse barbarity from Knox. Knox described Murtagh as a shadow in the dark; very perceptive of his canny elusiveness, Jamie thought. Knox said he was glad to see Jamie, then handed him a letter. Bad news from Governor Tryon, he continued: he planned to pardon the Regulator leaders. Full pardons? For everyone? Jamie couldn't believe it but Knox's anger was evident. Knox didn't know why Tryon would order this; it made him look foolish. He reminded Jamie of his "excessiveness" in the jail, which Jamie had called murder. "I cannot face knowing that it might have been for nothing," Knox said.

OUTLANDER (2020) 03 502 Aftermath.
"You executed a man without a trial!" Jamie hissed at Lt. Knox, who seemed stunned by his own action: inexcusable, dishonourable, and had largely been a reflexive furious reaction to yet another man spitting at him as well as his larger anger at Regulator crimes. Mr. Fanning came in just then and Jamie found himself having to cover for Lt. Knox's murdering while at the same time feared for the safety of the remaining two prisoners, who thought Jamie was betraying them by siding with the Redcoats. He tried to wordlessly convey by his facial expression that he was still with them. They were put back in cells, unharmed. Now what? Word of this murder would reach Murtagh. Jamie wanted to save lives, ALL lives, no matter what side.
A little later, Jamie sat in the tavern with Lt. Knox, who still seemed shaken as much as Jamie was angered. "I've become the very thing I despise," Knox said. "I'm a hypocrite." How could Jamie have any sympathy for him? All he could say was, "What's done is done." Avoid any more bloodshed if at all possible. There was still the problem of the other 2 Regulator men, whom the British would see hanged regardless of trial by law. However, as Knox had more ale, Jamie found out the officer wasn't sorry the Regulator died; he was sorry he gave him a soldier's death by sword instead of hanging as a criminal. Freshly enraged, Jamie barely restrained his tongue and right then, decided to help the prisoners escape. There was no reasoning with revenge. Lt. Knox, unrealising of Jamie's new plan, reminded Jamie again of his oath to King and country. He knew it all too well.
