The Deer Hunter premiered in Los Angeles on 8 December 1978 (before wider release in the US in February 1979).

Michael Cimino went over budget on the film (which cost $15 million), but the box office success (it earned more than $45 million) more than covered the overages (unlike Cimino’s next film Heaven’s Gate).

The Deer Hunter was nominated for 9 Academy Awards, but also faced significant backlash, from Veterans groups, the Soviet Union (who protested the film’s treatment of North Vietnamese) and other delegates (Cubans, East Germans, Bulgarians, Poles and Czechoslovakians) at the Berlin Film Festival walked out of the film’s screening, and critics.

Protestors announced that they would attend the Academy Award ceremony. According to producer Michael Deeley, Robert De Niro was so concerned about the protestors, he refused to attend (he was nominated for Best Actor, but did not win).

The film received 5 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Christopher Walken), Best Editing (Peter Zinner), and Best Sound (Darin Knight, William McCaughey, Aaron Rochin, and my friend Richard Portman, who had been nominated 8 times). Meryl Streep received her first of 21 nominations (Maggie Smith received the Oscar that year for California Suite).

Bowie, in any case, was my star; and like any other star his every whim, fear, demand or tantrum would have to be dealt with as promptly as possible, and at the smallest possible expense to the production budget. There was a moment when filming might have ground to a halt: this was when the star became convinced that someone or something had poisoned his preferred tipple, a glass of skimmed milk. He claimed to see some strange matter swimming about in the liquid, and was ill for two days afterwards. On another occasion there was a fuss because the star’s mobile dressing room had been set up on a site which he felt must be an old Indian burial ground. There were no grave markers, sign-posts, artefacts or any other necrological indications, but we moved the dressing room anyway.
