Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the trail to hell in a shady meadow green are the souls of all dead troopers camped near a good old-time canteen and this eternal resting place is known as Fiddler's Green Marching past, straight through to hell the infantry are seen accompanied by the engineers, artillery, and marines for none but the shades of Cavalry men dismount at Fiddler's Green

Though some go curving down the trail to seek a warmer scene no trooper ever gets to Hell 'ere he's emptied his canteen and so rides back to drink again with friends at Fiddler's Green

And so when man and horse go down beneath a saber keen or in a roaring charge of fierce melee you stop a bullet clean and the hostiles come back to get your scalp just empty your canteen and put your pistol to your head and go to Fiddler's Green

you trained me

you handed me my sabers and taught me how to be a good trooper

you ate your meals at a table that you taught me was something i had to earn the privilege to sit at

you were my brother when i was too mad to be brothers with the others who said they were the same to me

you were someone i looked up to as a model of self confidence and knowledge of what you wanted to do with your life. 

you were all of this

and you are gone

and i loved you as a father, and yet a brother at the same time

people wont understand a relationship like that unless they shared it with us
