Yesterday, two very important and beloved gay activists in Allentown, Buffalo NY were murdered in what the district is refusing to acknowledge as a hate crime. Michael Harmon and Jordan Celotto have left a beautiful and irrefutable mark on the LGBT+ community of western NY and have worked as mentors for and close friends to people close to me in my everyday life.

The willful ignorance of those holding office in upstate NY cannot be overstated - following the viscous murder and TORTURE of Sam Nordquist it is genuinely absurd to tout that either of these instances are ANYTHING BUT a hate crime.

My heart absolutely aches for the communities and families, these two people paramount to the modern movement in Buffalo.

Teen Review Tuesday: Stick by Michael Harmon

Here’s a review from Isiah:

A boy who has the nickname “Stick” plays football at his high school. Is team decided to bully a boy named Preston. Stick doesn’t think this is right. When Stick plays football, he feels like he isn’t playing for himself. He makes an odd friendship with Preston, and overcomes challenges and adventures together.

I am recommending this book because it is a great realistic fiction book, and you can relate a lot to the main character. The book is very much influenced by sports, which makes it very good.

Michael Harmon is the author of several award-winning novels for young adult. His latest is Under the Bridge, a gritty story about skateboarding, high school dropouts, and the seedier side of town. His next book is tentatively titled Stick, and doesn't yet have a release date. In case you're struggling with writer's block in your quest to write a NaNo novel, he took some time to tell us how he deals with his:

"For the past nine years, I can, without hesitation, say that I have been blocked three times, the last being several months ago. I used to be dreadfully afraid of even thinking about it, but once it happened, there was little to do but figure it out. It took me awhile to realize it, but every time I've been blocked, it's been because things outside of my writing life were in disarray. Money, health, relationship issues, whatever. For me, that's the key. And while I've mistakenly obsessed over my writing, or lack thereof, during these times, which simply made it worse, I've tried a ton of things to get rid of it. Which includes taking a break, praying, getting incredibly drunk, starting new stories, begging mercy from whatever writer god that might exist, exercising, meditating, and cursing at the top of my lungs in empty rooms. I've also just settled on being depressed, thinking that I'd 'lost' it. None worked. What does work is the hardest to do. I have to ignore my writing, which is the very thing I'm panicked about, and come to terms with the problem or problems in my real life. Then it all comes back, and usually with more passion."
