History: Michael grew up in a less privileged part of Dublin with a devout Irish Catholic family. He was loved and well-cared for, at least as far as the family could afford. His environment and the happenings in it are the most probable cause for his fear of police and strange dogs.
Ever since he was very young, he was able to see and speak to spirits almost anywhere he went. Curious about his gift, he went into town one day and entered a Pagan shop and asked for help. The woman there agreed to help him use his abilities to his advantage and took him in as her apprentice.
Knowing his parents would not approve of their son taking lessons from a Pagan “witch”, Michael hid it from them as much as possible. However, it wasn’t long before they found paraphernalia in his bedroom. Furious and ashamed, they kicked him out onto the street and forbade him from coming back. He spent a few weeks living with his teacher, working in her shop and saving up whatever money he could. Finally he bought a one-way plane ticket to the United States. He was sixteen years old.
Once in New York, he used his teacher’s connections to make friends in the Wiccan community very quickly. When he turned 18, he received a letter alerting him to the fact that his teacher had died, and had left her shop to him in her will. Having no desire to return to Ireland, he sold hers and bought one in Manhattan. The real estate agent told him that a family had died in the building. A father left his wife and two children and lit the building on fire, killing all three of them. The apartment was rebuilt a few years later, but the three victim’s spirits remained there.
The mother, Elizabeth, is extremely hateful and often violent toward strange men in her house. The first night Michael spent in the apartment, she attempted to strangle him in his sleep. She choked him to the point of unconsciousness but failed to kill him. When he awoke, he sought her out and explained that he was not there to do any harm. Over the next few weeks, she made a few more sporadic attempts on his life but never followed through, as though debating with herself, or trying to simply scare him away. Eventually, after seeing nothing bad come from Michael’s stay, and since her children seemed to take a liking to him, she accepted his presence and left him alone.
Sarah, the daughter who was killed around age five or six, is playful and harmless. She causes damage sometimes, but it is almost always accidental. Alexander, a boy around age three or four, is the only of the three confined to the shop rather than the apartment above it. He is a prankster and sometimes breaks some of the wares. Michael leaves a ball out for Sarah to play with, and a bowl of candy for Alexander.
After only a few days owning the shop, Michael decided it was time to swallow his fear and get a dog for protection, both for himself and for the shop. After some searching, he decided on an Irish wolfhound, partially because of its intimidating size and partially because he had a soft spot for his fellow Irish. Almost immediately he knew he wanted a puppy, since his mistrust of strange dogs plus the sheer size of the wolfhound would prove difficult to handle. He found a breeder in Long Island and spent the rest of his inheritance on a dark gray male, who he named Liam. Liam goes almost everywhere with him and is extremely well-trained and obedient.
