Paul graduated in 1973 with a BFA in Theatre, and his fellow eventual celebrity classmates included Married...with Children star Katey Sagal and Knight Rider and Baywatch star David Hasselhoff, the latter of whom was Paul's roommate for a while (both remained friends with Reubens until the end of his life). Sagal later recalled that Paul was "my fantastically colorful best buddy down the hall from me in the dorm. His dorm room was like Pee-wee’s playhouse! He was the only one with a decorated dorm room, everyone else had posters with Scotch tape, and you'd go to his room and it was a party. We'd smoke pot and find a piano, and I'd bang away on the keys, writing my forlorn, bluesy songs of woe. Paul used to love to sit on the bench beside me and have me sing my songs for him. He was my big fan. Paul's love and friendship for me was a bridge."
