Michael Kirby and partner Johan retire from 22-year charity role
Former judge Michael Kirby and his partner Johan van Vloten have retired as patrons of our longest-running HIV charity, the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation, after 22 years.
Bobby Goldsmith Foundation is Australia’s oldest community-based HIV charity. Since 1984, the foundation has provided crucial support to Australians living with HIV.
Michael Kirby and Johan van Vloten first joined the charity in 2002. At the BGF’s Red Ball Gala Auction last week, they announced their retirement from their roles as patrons after 22 years.
The former High Court justice said the charity is “40 years young, a continuing service and an inspiration amongst the organisations of our community.”
“This is not a one-person effort. This is an effort of a community that has come together to deal with a very big challenge, a horrible challenge and to reach out and to give help and to give kindness,” he said.
“The time comes to give way to the new generations. We want to say good luck and good wishes to those who carry on.”
Michael Kirby’s extensive work in human rights and HIV advocacy meant he played a critical role in shaping BGF over 20 years, the charity said.
“[Michael and Johan’s] unwavering support, dedication and tireless advocacy have been instrumental in shaping BGF into what it is today,” CEO Nick Lawson explained.
“We’re so fortunate to have had their guidance over the years. I, for one, am thankful to have worked alongside them both.”
Ita Buttrose and Hamish MacDonald named BGF patrons
Michael Kirby reflected on the foundation’s namesake, Bobby Goldsmith, an Australian athlete. Bobby was one of the first Australians lost to AIDS in 1984.
“Bobby Goldsmith was, in a way, a symbol of those terribly fearsome early days when HIV/AIDS came along,” Michael Kirby recalled.
“He’s a very important person. His life symbolised the type of thing that the BGF has supported ever since his passing.”
Media icon and early HIV/AIDS campaigner Ita Buttrose was named a BGF patron last year. Journalist Hamish MacDonald was also named a patron in August.
“We’ve had some marvellous people working in BGF,” Michael Kirby said.
“I’ve been very proud to work alongside Ita Buttrose, who’s done so many good things in the community.
“We are being replaced by Hamish MacDonald. We wish him every success and we’re sure that he and Ita will do a wonderful job as patrons.
“We’ll continue to come to the Red Ball Galas and have some fun but also to dig deep to support the Foundation.”
Michael Kirby and Johan van Vloten have been together for over 50 years. The couple married in 2019, on the 50th anniversary of the night they met.
