Song Review: Mavis Staples & Friends - “The Weight” (Live, Nov. 19, 2014)

If there was a better way to conclude Mavis Staples’ all-star 75th-birthday celebration than with a performance of “The Weight,” it didn’t happen.

But based on the video of the performance - featuring a humongous band and an even bigger chorus of singers - “The Weight” was in fact the only way to cap the Nov. 19, 2014, concert in Chicago.

Set for audio and video release June 2 as Mavis Staples: I’ll Take You There An All-Star Concert Celebration, the 22-song set ended with the birthday girl at center stage trading lead vocals with Gregg Allman, Michael McDonald, Joan Osborne, Jeff Tweedy, Eric Church and Win Butler while the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Grace Potter, Keb’ Mo’ and members of Widespread Panic chime in on the chorus.

While Staples gets a bit too exuberant for her own good and hits some frighteningly bad notes in the process - it’s her birthday and she’ll wail if she wants to - this performance is astounding on video and must have been absolutely breathtaking in person. We should all have a birthday party like this once in our lives.

Mavis Staples Tribute Concert Coming to TV and CD/DVD

“She has such a special, deep voice,” Don Was said.

“Her voice will be heard many years after we’re all gone,” said Michael McDonald.

“We love Mavis,” said Win Butler.

Mavis is, of course, Mavis Staples. And her musical colleagues were speaking in the trailer for the upcoming three-CD, one DVD set I’ll Take You There: An All-Star Concert Celebration.

It’ll be released June 2. But the film, which captures Staples’ Nov 19, 2014, 75th-birthday celebration in Chicago, can be seen when it premieres at 10 p.m. Eastern, April 16 on AXS TV.

In addition to the aforementioned performers, the concert includes appearances from Gregg Allman, Eric Church, Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, Keb’ Mo’, Aaron Neville, Joan Osborne, Grace Potter, Bonnie Raitt, Jeff Tweedy, Widespread Panic and others.

“That night was really special,” Staples said in a news release.

“To be able to see so many of my friends up there performing the songs that I’ve sung for years was just incredible. I couldn’t wait to get up there and take the stage myself. It was a night I’ll never forget.”
