On January 26, 2019, the newest Zumwalt Class guided missile destroyer, the USS Michael Monsoor, was commissioned in San Diego, California. Sleek, and modern, the ship was celebrated as the newest in the line of Navy destroyers. But it’s the namesake of the vessel where the real story begins: Navy SEAL Michael Monsoor.

MA2 Michael Monsoor was a United States Navy Seal who was killed during the Iraq War and was awarded the Medal of Honor. On September 29, 2006 an insurgent threw a grenade onto a rooftop where Monsoor and several other SEAL and Iraqi soldiers were positioned. Monsoor quickly smothered the grenade with his body, absorbing the resulting explosion and saving his comrades from serious injury or death. His death is legendary and it has been portrayed in the film Act of Valor.
