THE GUILTY ONE
March 20, 1923
The Guilty One by Michael Morton and Peter Traill is a drama in three acts. It opened at the Selwyn Theatre on March 20, 1923 produced by A.H. Woods and staged by Edward Elsner. Generally panned by the critics, it ran 31 performances.
The play takes place in the London studio of Ronald Short. The time is the present [1923].
SYNOPSIS
~ Burns and Mantle, Best Plays of 1923
Before Broadway, the production was seen in Chicago at the Woods Theatre from August to November 1922. After closing on Broadway, the production played Poli’s Theatre in Washington DC in April 1923.
A film version was made by Paramount in 1924 directed by Joseph Henabery and starring Agnes Ayres in “the story of a wife who erred.”
CAST
Charles Waldron (1874-1946) as Ronald Short. From 1907 to 1946, he acted in more than 40 Broadway productions. Over his long career, he appeared in more than 60 films and is perhaps best known for his final film role, General Sternwood in the opening scenes of The Big Sleep (1946), starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.
Pauline Frederick (1883-1938) as Irene Short. Pauline made her stage debut at the age of 17 as a chorus girl and won other small roles on the stage before being discovered by illustrator Harrison Fisher who called her "the purest American beauty." With Fisher's help, she landed more substantial stage roles and was nicknamed "The Girl with the Topaz Eyes." Frederick made nearly 70 films and successfully transitioned from silents to talkies. She disliked talking pictures and returned to stage acting. Married five times, Frederick died at age 55.
CRITIQUE
~ Theatre Magazine, May 1923
Note that the last line of the above item refers to “the cut-rate ticket shop at 43rd Street and Broadway.” This was an early pre-cursor to TKTS, which today sells discounted theatre tickets in Duffy Square. Joseph Leblang, or Joe Broadway as he was known, in 1894 created the Public Service Ticket Office in New York City that sold cut-price Broadway tickets to the public. It began in a small tobacco shop on 30th Street, but when Broadway theatres began moving north to Times Square, Leblang moved his operation to the basement of Gray's Drug Store on Broadway between 42nd and 43rd Streets. It was here that he pioneered the sale of Broadway tickets over the telephone and in the mail, with a special division of the USPS handling it. At its peak, the business sold over 2,000 tickets per day. Leblang ran the business until his untimely death in 1931 when the operation failed with his widow at the helm.
VENUE
Selwyn Theatre (227 West 42nd Street; 740 seats) opened its doors in 1918. By 1934, it was showing movies. In 1950, a unique policy was introduced: a sixty-minute play to precede each screening. Traditional double features quickly took over, lasting into the 1990s, when the theatre fell into the hands of The New 42nd Street. Roundabout Theatre signed a long-term lease and renovated the theatre renaming it the American Airlines Theatre in 2000 (below).
