Michael Panico, R.I.P.

Both Michael Cuscuna and I were shocked and saddened at the news we received the other day from Matt Kelly at Sony Archives. A dear friend and colleague, Michael Panico, the archives manager at Sony and a driving force with his own record label, Relative Pitch, had decided to leave this world at the young age of 53. Michael was a friend who had a broad taste and appreciation of music and jazz in particular. Whenever I was at the Archives doing research on a Mosaic project, he was always there with a helping and knowledgeable hand. Talking with Michael about music, hockey or any subject were a joy over lunch. Nate Chinen at NPR Music gave a loving tribute.

Behind A Death In Queens, A Major Loss For The Avant-Garde Jazz Community

Earlier this week, an array of news outlets in New York City reported a macabre discovery: The body of a 53-year-old man was found floating in a Queens marina, fully clothed, with chains wrapped around his legs. The body was noticed by a passerby along the shoreline of the World’s Fair Marina in Flushing Harbor, near Citi Field, around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday.
