CIM Alumni :: Conrad Jones solo debut with the Tucson Symphony is “flawless”

Cleveland Institute of Music alumnus and principal trumpet of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra Conrad Jones (BM’11, Michael Miller) performed George Tsontakis’s trumpet concerto “True Colors," February 13 and 15 to tremendous acclaim.

Jones, 24, was appointed to the principal trumpet of the Orchestra just last year. Of his performance reviewer Dr. Donald J. Behnke of the Green Valley News & Sun wrote:

The stated purpose of “True Colors” is to explore the colors of the trumpet as well as the true colors of the composer. Jones handled his part brilliantly, not only with his incredible embrasure but also a series of mutes and homemade devices to display the audio range of the instrument.

His performance was flawless and amply demonstrated his interest in and conquest of the various venues in which the trumpet is typically heard — classic hall, jazz club, blues room. It was all stunning and outstanding. To those of us reared on virtuosic trumpet solos like “Carnival of Venice,” this work provides a broader, fascinating exploration of musical shadings and audio tints that help to soften its basic atonal structure.

The pièce de résistance was Jones’ encore, offered unaccompanied and darkly muted — a jazzy, uniquely improvised Rodgers and Hart favorite, “My Funny Valentine.” Needless to say, the audience loved it.

Cleveland Institute of Music alumnus Conrad Jones (BM'11 / Michael Sachs) is the featured soloist this weekend when the Tucson Symphony Orchestra takes on Tsontakis' True Colors for Trumpet and Orchestra, Beethoven's Overture to Egmont and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5. February 13 and 15 in Tucson Music Hall.

Beethoven Overture to Egmont Tsontakis True Colors for Trumpet and Orchestra Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5

True Colors “explores both the softer lyrical side and jazzy side of the trumpet,” says Jones, now in his second season as Tucson Symphony Orchestra Principal Trumpet.

“It seems to be equally influenced by baroque trumpet style as it was by a slew of Woody Shaw records, which is an extremely cool combination,” Jones added.

In addition to his work with the Symphony, Jones -- along with his brothers Gary (trombone) and Doug (tuba) along with brothers Hayato Tanaka (trumpet) and Hirofumi Tanaka (horn) -- is a member of The Kyōdai Brass Quintet. The group was formed at CIM in 2009 and focuses on community outreach, recording and playing where and when they can.  That's not as easy as it sounds since the members are now scattered across the country.

CIM Faculty :: Head of CIM Trumpet Department named Music Director for Strings Music Festival

Congratulations to our own Michael Sachs for being named the new Music Director of the Strings Music Festival. He will begin his contract in the fall of 2014 with concerts kicking off in the summer of 2015.

Principal Trumpet for The Cleveland Orchestra for 26 years, Sachs is the head of the Trumpet Department and Chair of the Brass Division at the Cleveland Institute of Music, having joined our faculty in 1988.
