I’ve always thought of this as kind of a cutesy thing to say, with the gender ambiguity being the main point.

But

Today it occurred to me that this really accurately sums up Aziraphale’s relationship with humanity. He feels responsible for them as someone who can see some of the bigger picture and has more power than they do. He cares for and protects them as best he can trying to lead them along the best path and away from danger. He, heartbreakingly, has to see them come and go because their lifespans are so short compared to his own.

Great interview on This Morning 29 July 2020 with Michael Sheen about his role in Prodigal Son! :)

Michael Sheen: Series 2 got commissioned which was fantastic, but of course it's still a little bit up in the air when we'll be able to start filming it. The writers are writing it at the moment and we're hoping that maybe around October time we'll be able to start, but obviously it has to be done safely. We're looking forward to it. I'm just trying to grow my hair and beard as long as I possibly can, so when we start Season 2 I’ve got a strong look.
