I love it when musicians talk about how it's put together. I used to read Owen pallet's entries about popular songs (like Bad Romance) at the time and he would talk about what specifically gives each song its impact and it was really cool
yeah. it’s definitely really interesting with music because there’s a commonality between audiences and a lot of artists when it comes to composition. a lot of them don’t actually know why the thing they’re doing works, just that it does. and they’ll develop their sound through experimentation. and with artists who really know what they’re doing, sometimes they’ll do something just completely off the wall that not everyone might even pick up on is off the wall. (ben folds comes to mind again, with the previous example of the way belinda works, and that password is full of m7add11s, which are a really interesting chord, but that’s not necessarily obvious on the surface)
