'Cook’s voyages the main feature on a Regency Terrestrial Globe' JOHN AND WILLIAM CARY, 1816 An impressive and rare pair of library globes, produced by the Cary firm, masters of globemaking of the late Regency period. Made in the closing stages of the Age of Discovery, the terrestrial globe shows the tracks of the major eighteenth-century navigators including Cook, La Pérouse and Vancouver, as well as the less familiar 1794 track of the East Indiaman Walpole, Captain Thomas Butler, on a pioneering trading voyage from the Cape of Good Hope to China, passing to the south and east of Australia though not calling at the new settlement of Port Jackson. Banks’ Florilegium comprises an astonishing 743 botanical engravings of plants collected by Sir Joseph Banks and Dr Daniel Solander in Maderia, Brazil, Tierra del Fuego, the Society Islands, New Zealand, Australia and Java on Captain Cook’s first voyage round the world in His Majesty’s Bark Endeavour, 1768–1771. On his return to London in 1771, Banks determined to publish a grand scientific record of his botanical collection. Over thirteen years, while Daniel Solander prepared the accompanying botanical texts, Banks employed five artists to complete the field sketches drawn on board ship from the fresh specimens by Sydney Parkinson, and eighteen engravers to create exquisite copperplate line engravings from the drawings. All of the plants included for publication were new to European botany. By 1784 all of the plates had been completed but, for a variety of reasons, Banks delayed publication. On his death in 1820, having served as President of the Royal Society for forty years and recognized as the great panjandrum of European science, Banks bequeathed his library and herbarium, together with the Florilegium plates, to the British Museum. "Cook set himself the task of sailing 'as far as I think it possible for man to go', an ambition perhaps deliberately echoed in the exhortation two centuries later to 'boldly go where no man has gone before'; his great descendants at NASA demonstrated their debt by naming the space shuttle Endeavour. A Joseph McGlennon sneak peak of his towering contribution, to our forthcoming exhibition, “Navigating Cook” NAVIGATING COOK, April 26 - May 23 @michaelreidsydney The myths and tales surrounding CAPTAIN JAMES COOK have evolved and transformed over the years since his arrival to Australia’s shores. First contact began as a standoff and ended as a skirmish. Eschewing the stance of Quakers – the first blow shall not be theirs - Cook is recorded to have fired twice on the Gweagal warriors. Once, between two warriors, with a musket. A stone is then known to have been returned from the shore. Cook fired again, with a second small shot musket aimed at the legs of an older, presumably senior warrior. Shots having been fired, troops then landed, and so began the relentless march of guns, germs and steel that disposed a people. Join us in exploring these shifting legacies in our upcoming group exhibition NAVIGATING COOK @michaelreidsydney. Artists have been invited to create works that respond to the attributed identities of Cook and the exhibition holds space for interrogation of myth-making in the public realm. My colleagues and I are pleased to be presenting works from TREVOR SMITH in our upcoming group exhibition NAVIGATING COOK @michaelreidsydney from April 26 - May 23. Following a hugely successful 2019, including a solo exhibition in Berlin and Sydney, Trevor will be exhibiting new textile works. Working with textiles is a hobby, taught to sew as a child by his mother, Jean, crochet is his current obsession. In 2009, after a break of about 25 years, during which time he worked as a curator across several public collections, Trevor returned to crochet when he participated in ‘The Big Hole Yarn’ a Regional Arts Victoria project at the local swimming hole in Panmure, east of Warrnambool.
