Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Michele Austin in Hard Truths (2024), dir. Mike Leigh
and her, over there, with that fat baby. cold, cold, cold, and she'd walk it up and down the street with nothing but a big, pink bow on its bald head so everybody can tell it's a girl. like i care. parading it around in the little outfit, not dressed for the weather, nah. with pockets. what's a baby got pockets for? what's it gonna keep in its pocket? a knife? it's ridiculous.

Flight Films
Home again and managed to fit a couple of films on my "To See" list in on the flight home.
Harbin - "Корея! Ура!"
It won Best Film at the Baeksang Art Awards 2025.
Hyun Bin and Lee Dong Wook star with memorable support from Jo Woo Jin, Park Jeong Min and Jeon Yeo Been. Jo Woo Jin in particular caught my attention here.
It's the story of the assassination of Ito Hirobumi by Korean independence activist and martyr An Jung Guen in 1909
He was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1962 for his efforts for Korean independence.
The central message of the film is: "we must persevere so that all those who lost their lives before us fighting for Korean independence are recognised and remembered". Korean independence was finally achieved with the exit of Japan from Korea in 1945.
Other K series that reflect this era of Korean history include Mr Sunshine and Song of the Bandits.
Hard Truths
This Mike Leigh film is not for the faint hearted especially for anyone who has lost a parent. It tells the story of two sisters and the different ways they handle the loss of their mother. Marianne Jean-Baptiste's Pansy is as infuriating as she is riveting. Her grief is isolating and self destructive and seems to stem from the complexity of her relationship with her mother and the fears that she carries within her from her childhood.
She pushes everyone away and is left drowning in a grief that cannot loose its hold on her until she lets someone in. Michele Austin is the sister that offers the possibility . Nevertheless unlike many Mike Leigh films where the film's resolution hints however vaguely at a slightly more positive future, the ending of this film is far more ambiguous.
