Summary: There…there was a way for them to get and stay warm, Wei Ying had been thinking about it since the last ember of the fire went out, when he had finally given up on trying to rekindle the fire. Watching the single orange ember’s light dim, until it had turned to ash, had solidified a decision in Wei Ying’s mind. He wouldn’t let Lan Zhan die in this cave. Even if it meant he wouldn’t come out of it alive. Kay's comments: I loved this Huli Jing lore in this story! With them only being born a Huli Jing if a soulmate was also out there being born as a Huli Jing somewhere! And also really loved Jin Zixuan and Lan Qiren teaming up in this story, a very unlikely but charming pair of allies. Excerpt: Lan Zhan’s eyes widened the more Wei Ying spoke, the more he moved their hands around. He couldn’t contain the gasp that escaped him as Wei Ying placed his hand on top of his head, directing him to send a thin stream of spiritual energy to him and to stop once he felt Wei Ying’s. They were the same instructions his mother used to give him, so that they could still communicate even when she was- Wei Ying’s words… the way he spoke as if they were his last, the tears that streamed down his face as he looked at him before transforming, before shifting into the most beautiful fox, Huli Jing, Lan Zhan had ever seen. All black from head to toe, five bushy tails fanning out behind him, Wei Ying had never looked more beautiful than in that moment. Lan Zhan didn’t think as he moved.

Summary: Jiang Wanyin had claimed Wei Wuxian left when they were sleeping, that they had planned on going back to Lotus Pier, to fight against the Wen stronghold that was there, to reclaim the bodies of Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan - and Wei Wuxian had fled, run, disappeared, vanished. He claimed that he woke up, and Wei Wuxian was gone, not a single trace of him in the space they had found to sleep in. Immediately, others were giving Jiang Wanyin their condolences for having such a disobedient disciple, for Wei Wuxian fleeing in the night after everything he had caused, leaving the aftermath to be faced alone by Jiang Wanyin. Lan Wangji had never believed such a story. Kay's comments: Was super hooked on this story and pretty much forced to binge, since it was so engaging! Loved the idea of calamity Wei Wuxian, though suspension of disbelief is needed with regards to his acceptance within the cultivation society. Definitely not for fans of Jiang Cheng. Excerpt: “Wei Ying!” Lan Wangji spoke, arms open as he approached him, wanting nothing more than to pull the man into his arms, to not live another moment without him, to share his heart and his love no matter what Wei Ying thought of him or his feelings. Lan Wangji blinked. Wei Ying wasn’t in front of him. “No, no.” He whispered, raising a hand to his head. It couldn’t have been an apparition, a hallucination. Wei Ying had looked so real. “Oh.” A voice came from behind him. “My bad.” Lan Wangji turned around, watching as Wei Ying’s form solidified, as he went from a ghostly form to solid. Lan Wangji could see through him before his form shifted, before it became solid. That could only mean-

Summary: It was an extreme, a desperate decision fueled by anger towards the entire cultivation world, a grief deeper than the deepest trenches in the ocean. The realization that Lan Wangji would now have to continue on living a second time without his beloved, where Wei Wuxian had died once again. Where, once more, his love had been taken from him by cruel, unrighteous men who thought they knew better, that they were doing the world a justice. Lan Qiren had seen the state that his nephew had been in after Wei Wuxian’s first death, what Lan Wangji had done in his grief then, and he feared what Lan Wangji would do to himself if he was left alone with this repeated grief.

Summary: "Why does no one believe you both are in a relationship with each other?" he asked over dinner, Lan Huan not in attendance. Lan Zhan and Wei Ying shared a glance filled with years of that exact same question - along with the rage, anger, sadness, and acceptance that came with such a thought. Wei Ying swirled his drink around with his straw, the ice softly clinking against the clear glass. "They don't believe us. That's the only conclusion we've ever been able to come to Uncle." he responded, hesitantly looking up at the elder. "Uncle, you and the Wen siblings are the only people who believe Wei Ying and I are together, that we are married. Brother has always said we were best friends, soulmates, then immediately offered to arrange dates for me." ------------------------------------------------ Reverse trope: "instead of fake dating, everyone is convinced that you aren't actually dating" Kay's comments: I'm actually really fond of the trope that no one believes it that two people are actually dating, but unfortunately, we have so few stories, which made me even happier to stumble upon this one. Very well done story where no one apart from Lan Qiren and the Wen siblings actually believe that Wangxian are dating. Some of it is due to homophobia, some of it disbelief and my heart aches for them. Luckily, Lan Qiren is actually really supportive in this story and looks out for them, urging them to cut people out of their life who don't accept their relationship even after five years of marriage. Bonus point for surprisingly decent person Jin Zixuan. Excerpt: But this evening in particular, Lan Qiren was supposed to be at his Saturday night book club, he was supposed to not be back until close to 9pm. So, when the front door opened at 7:30pm, and had a straight view into the living room - where Wei Ying was perched on Lan Zhan’s lap, hands tangled in his hair - well, Lan Qiren wasn’t the happiest person in the world. Wei Ying still has nightmares of that moment, of being caught with his shirt hanging off his body, Lan Zhan’s hands palming and cupping his ass through his sweatpants, his own hands alternating between cupping Lan Zhan’s face and tugging him closer by his hair. After the initial anger had subsided, after they had gotten all their clothes back on, Lan Qiren told them to sit at the table - where they would continue to sit in silence for almost 30 minutes. “How long has this been going on?” Wei Ying could feel Lan Zhan’s hand tightly grasping his underneath the table. “Four years today, Uncle.” Wei Ying could tell that Lan Qiren had been expecting a much different answer, perhaps a more recent one, rather than four years. It had almost been as shocking to Wei Ying that they had managed to keep their relationship a secret from everyone for as long as they had. The simple fact that it was Lan Zhan’s uncle that discovered their relationship first seemed like a bad omen to him at the time - not knowing that the man would come to be one of their greatest supporters from there on out.
