Traintober Day 27: Record Breaker
Excerpt from future LOTFF chapter, probably The Legend Continues...
Michiru puffed into Vicarstown Station. She had to admit, pulling coaches was a welcome change after pulling freight cars for so long.
Suddenly, she saw an A4 puff on the other side of the platform. This, however, wasn't just any A4-it was Mallard, one of Spencer's sisters. Michiru shuddered at the thought of Spencer. Rude, crass, arrogant-no wonder he was easily disliked among the engines of Sodor. She didn't have the best memories of him, either-he was always chasing her around.
"I hope she isn't as rude as Spencer," she thought. She had heard from Gordon that A4's were notorious for being proud and ruthless, and Mallard was one of the ruder ones. She did look quite beautiful, though-her blue paint with brass fittings shone in the sun.
Shyly, Michiru cleared her throat. "Um, hello there! Welcome to Sodor!"
Mallard looked at her. "A Saint Class?" she sneered with surprise. "I wasn't aware that some were preserved."
"Of course! Some of my brothers and sisters were scrapped, but others, like me, were preserved."
Mallard sniffed in response. "Despite your pristine origins, you smell like you've pulled freight cars for most of your life. You'd never catch an A4-especially me-do that sort of work."
"Um...have you ever tried it?" Michiru asked curiously.
Mallard blinked, caught off guard. "W-What did you say?" she demanded, trying to hide her shock.
"Have you ever tried pulling freight trains? They're quite different from passenger trains, you know. No passengers complaining about their destinations, just you, the cars, and the pretty countryside."
Mallard was at a loss for words. "N-No, I have not." she said finally. She looked closely at Michiru. Her silver paint with dark purple lining glimmered like a polished diamond, her glasses placed cutely on her freckled face.
"In many ways, she reminds me of Silver Link," Mallard thought. Her older sister, despite being the first of the A4's built, was always the one who wanted the A4's to step out of their comfort zone. She would always go around pulling freight trains in addition to her passenger runs, and despite being criticized by the others, she would not complain about her duties.
"What is your name?" she asked.
Michiru smiled shyly. "My name is Michiru."
"What a pretty name," replied Mallard. "Well then, I'd better be off. See you later!"
"Bye, Mallard!" replied Michiru. As she watched the A4 go, she thought to herself, "There's something sad about Mallard..."
