I'm wondering what you would do with the Mick-Amber-Mara romance plot in a darker reboot of HOA? I'm trying to figure that out myself, but the most I've been able to do is have Amber breakup pre-season one and Mick and Mara having a secret romance during the summer and going into the new school year. It's harder to make the show darker just because of that whole plotline in S1. Any suggestions?

Hi Anon,

Thanks for your ask! There are quite a few ways you could take their relationship in a “darker” reboot depending on which characters you wish to, for lack of a better word, ‘protect’.

One route you could pursue would have Amber and Mick taking a “break” while Amber is in Paris for the summer. Mick and Mara could have grown closer/possibly kissed over the summer since they remained in England. When the new term starts Mick and Amber restart their relationship and Mick decides to not tell Amber about the kiss. Mara is obviously still head over heels for Mick so she takes a more active role in sabotaging Amber’s relationship.

Another route you could try is the way that the writers handled the Mara/Jerome/Willow triangle. This would highlight Mick’s indecisiveness. Personally, it’s my least favorite route, but it’s an option.

Another option would have Amber choosing to break up with Mick earlier in the season to focus on Sibuna stuff. This would allow the triangle to be resolved with no cheating (emotional or physical).

Number 6 - Even at our swiftest speed … by @mickber

I can never get away from this fic. I keep coming back to it over and over when I feel like I need to have my heart crushed a little.

This is the story about the end of a taboo relationship. Dipper is utterly broken, an older teenager who is irreparably damaged by the trauma of what happened at Gravity Falls, and now totally unable to handle the loss of a subsequent intimate relationship he had with Mabel. It is a startlingly harsh portrayal of a young man who must struggle against PTSD completely on his own, the forbidden nature of their love affair requiring him to keep all his despair secret.

It is a compelling story on so many fronts. Stylistically, for instance: it feels so uncomfortable to read, thanks to the double whammy of second-person Dipper POV, and a timeline that jumps forward and backward. It’s not confusing, but it sets my soul into a mode to screwed with. Then with vicious efficiency and lacking any mercy, the events of this story proceed to hammer away at said soul.

I said before that this is an angst masterpiece, and I stand by that. I beg the author: please, please write more for this fandom!

Day 16 - E-o-F’s Pinecest Authors Appreciation Project

I'm combining these two into one post primarily because neither has a particularly broad offering of fics to read, so there's less to absorb from them. But what they have produced is so significant, there's just no way I could dismiss either one.

Both of these ladies came to my attention last fall. In both cases, I read their first Pinecest story they'd ever published. And in both cases, I was shocked by this fact. Damn it, they were both so good!

Starting with “Protection”, Sauce produced a tremendously moving story of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression, and of the depths of the love that Dipper and Mabel share. When I can be affected by a story that hard, I know that the author has a lot of talent. She “gets” how to convey complex emotion so well. Even though I cannot relate to this kind of pain from any personal experience, I think I now have an inkling.

Sauce has followed up with the start of a multi-chapter sequel in the same AU, and another unrelated drabble, both of which show us she is just as capable of lightening things up a bit. That's what's nice about a catalog of work: we get to see the full ability of a writer.

With Mick, though, there is only one fic to judge her work by. But man, is it a doosy!

“Even at our swiftest speed …” is a different take on Dipper’s battles with PTSD, and it produced in me some of the most horrific, terrible feels I've ever had the immense pleasure to have experienced. Mick's portrayal of Dipper's awful situation was so wonderfully done, it hurts when I think about it. And it was told in a unique writing style (second-person POV, Tarantino-esque time jumps in the narrative) that accentuated the intense discomfort I felt while reading it. This is an angst masterpiece. God damn!

I know that both of these wonderful authors want to write more Pinecest in the future. For this, I hope I speak for everyone I know on Tumblr when I say, “Thank goodness!” Both of you are a credit to this fandom. Thank you.
