I came across this oddity while taking a stroll down memory lane and hope the principals don’t mind my giving it a little exposure. This is Sonny Boy’s song “One Way Out” (mislabelled here as “I See a Man Downstairs”), made famous by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Now, Sonny and Jimmy Page probably don’t need much introduction, but Brian Auger was a keyboardist extraordinaire doubtless known for his work with Julie Driscoll and Trinity.Quite how these three got together in 1965 is beyond me.
Anyway, this frenetic blues shouter of a song in Sonny Boy’s hands here becomes almost a big band bounce number with each of the three principals taking delicious solos, along with twin saxes - Joe Harriot and Alan Skidmore. The record also featured the fabulous and ubiquitous Micky Waller on drums.
A strange but rewarding brew. Enjoy!
