Beautiful Dancing Frogs (Micrixalus adonis), family Micrixalidae, endemic to the western Ghats of India

Males use a waving display of the hind feet to attract females. They live and breed near noisy running streams. Their calls cannot be heard well over the sound of the rushing water, so visual displays work better than typical frog calls.

This species was first described in 2014.

Hoppy New Year: Dancing frogs are endemic to India's Western Ghats, an area of incredible biodiversity. Some scientists believe that there are still more species of dancing frog yet to be discovered there.

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day

If there's one thing elegant dancing frogs are good at, it's giving 'em the old razzle dazzle. This species gets its name from the way males will wave their feet in the air to attract females. This behaviour may have come about as a way to display their strenght and the length of their legs-- both important traits to look for in a partner.
