The Monte Verde micro lot is located on the Tilarán Mountain Range, part of the northern mountains of Costa Rica. This area is adjacent to the worldfamous Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, south of the Arenal Volcano. An important characteristic to note about the farm is that almost 50% of the land is covered with forest and rich biological corridors. The LIFE (Low Impact For Earth), the organization that cares for the farm, is owned by 10 families, most of whom come from previous generations who have also worked in coffee production. The Monte Verde also collaborates with various educational institutions including Texas State University, Blyth Academy, Monteverde Institute and Michigan University in order to perpetuate the knowledge they’ve worked so hard to acquire.
What is Gesha Coffee?
Gesha (Sometimes spelled Geisha) is a variety of coffee primarily grown in Central and South America. Its name comes from the Gesha woredas in the African country of Ethiopia. Sometime in the 1930s – 1960s (the exact year is not 100%), the first gesha coffee plants come to Central America from a nursery in Kenya. It was believed at the time that the gesha coffee would be resistant to coffee rust, a very common blight that affects coffee around the world, or would have a higher yield of coffee cherries. This was, however, discovered to not be true and the coffee plants where abandoned.
In 2003, workers at the Esmeralda Jaramillo coffee farm in Panama discovered some of the abandoned gesha coffee plants. The coffee harvested from the plants produced a complex coffee with amazing fruit notes. The owners of the farm, The Peterson family, entered the coffee, Esmeralda Special, in several competitions throughout the following years. Esmeralda Special it took all the competitions by storm and has won/is winning several awards. The a recent auction in May of 2013 priced Esmeralda Special at $350.25 per pound!
Luckily for coffee drinkers everywhere, more farms are beginning to produce the gesha variety. In 2007, Rigoberto Herrera and Luis Eduardo Herrera began to grow the varietal on some of their farm in Colombia after extensively researching the varietal. The brothers employ only experienced female works to harvest the coffee cherries by hand and pay them a daily wadge, as opposed to a weight based wadge, to allow them to take their time in selecting only the best cherries. It is our privilege to offer Rigoberto Herrera and Luis Eduardo Herrera's Gesha “Paraiso” Micro-lot at our two locations as well as our website. It has pronounced floral aroma and a distinct clarity in the cup. Creamy body, and brilliant acidity with flavors of black tea, milk chocolate, and tropical fruits.
