　その機関車は、切り通しの奥から這い出してきた一匹の、巨大な黒い昆虫を思わせた。

　夕闇の迫るプラットホームに、C51の巨躯が横たわっている。ボイラーから漏れる蒸気は、湿った空気と混じり合い、周辺に停滞する重苦しい沈黙をいっそう濃密なものにしていた。新幹線の白磁のような軽やかさとは対極にある、この鉄の塊には、隠しようのない「生活の垢」が染みついている。煤煙に汚れ、油を塗りつけられた動輪の鈍い光は、野心に敗れ、地方へと左遷されていった役人の、卑屈な眼光にも似ていた。

　ふいに、けたたましい汽笛が鳴った。それは、この閉塞した社会の底辺で呻吟する者たちが上げる、断末魔の叫びのようにも聞こえる。吐き出される黒煙は、冬の重い雲と混じり合い、やがてすべてを覆い隠していく。

　この煤煙の向こう側で、誰がどのような陰謀を巡らせ、どのような絶望を抱いてこの列車に乗り込んだのか。
