10 cool Android apps by Microsoft: games, productivity tools, lifestyle apps, and more
It is hard to mention Microsoft without its hugely popular Windows platform coming to mind. The latter has influenced the lives of generations during its three-decade existence and is likely to continue doing so with a promising product like Windows 10 around the corner. Android, on the other hand, isn’t among the first associations one would make upon hearing the tech giant’s name. That’s why some will be surprised to hear that Microsoft has several dozens of Android apps already published in the Google Play store. Today, we’ll take a look at 10 of them, ranging from quick and easy-to-learn word games to full-fledged office packs and lifestyle applications.
Who said that smartphones are only good for fun and games? Using Microsoft’s Office Mobile suite, you can stay productive even while on the go. Okay, these apps might not be quite as powerful as their desktop counterparts, but they do cover the essentials needed in any office pack. The software lets you open and edit documents in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint formats. Naturally, the apps’ interface layouts have been designed for use on a smartphone’s relatively small screen.
We can’t be near our PCs all the time, and that’s why apps like Microsoft Remote Desktop exist. With its help, you can virtually access your computer from an Android mobile device, as long as both are connected to the web.
Xim is a photo sharing app that brings a single stream of images to multiple devices. In other words, it lets you share images from your own screen, and all invited to view them may do so on their smartphone or tablet, either in a browser or in the Xim app itself. Panning and zooming is done in sync between devices for maximum group fun.
MSN Health & Fitness – Workouts
Here’s the app that might help you meet those New Year’s resolution goals. It boasts a database containing over 1000 exercise videos, nutritional and medical refecences, and a really neat symptom checker to look up various health conditions. In addition, the app doubles as a diet and exercise tracker.
MSN Food & Drink – Recipes
And if you’ve already lost those extra pounds you gained last month, here is Microsoft’s guide to the yummiest foods and drinks in existence. The app offers a rich collection of food and drink recipes, and for those not so confident in their cooking skills, there’s a generous list of cooking tips and how-to guides.
Every smartphone needs to have a great weather app installed on it, and MSN Weather is Microsoft’s offering. It provides hourly, daily, and 10-day forecasts, along with historical weather averages for the curious individual in you. Unfortunately, a widget is missing in the app’s feature arsenal.
And here we have Microsoft’s take on the Android lock screen. It is a feature-rich piece of software that brings shortcuts, toggle controls, notifications, and calendar events straight to your lock screen. (Note that performance might vary between devices.)
Like word games? Then you’re surely going to love Wordament. Think of it as a word finding tournament in which you’re racing against thousands of people on the same board.
Another word game (Microsoft seems to be into these) you should try is Snap Attack. Unlike Scrabble and its clones, however, this game forces you to think fast when building your words as each round lasts just 150 seconds.
Tentacles: Enter The Dolphin
This one’s a bit weird, but it is worth trying nonetheless. Long story short, you’re in control of that small black creature – the result of a science experiment gone wrong – and your goal is to pass through a level unscathed, all while avoiding enemies and collecting points.
