why me?
So last night was an interesting night. And by interesting, I of course mean it was a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (I mean Night). Okay, okay, so it wasn't quite that bad.
It was maybe 10 or 10:30 pm. I decided I was really craving chocolate, so I went to the vending machine. I really wanted the extra crispy kit-kat bar. And yay! it was there. There was a girl popping popcorn in the microwave. She warned me not to get the doritos or the rice krispies treats, because "it will eat your quarters." I said k, thanks. And then I got my delicious candy bar.
When I passed the girl, she was pushing her bag of microwavable popcorn into the garbage can. There was definitely a burning smell in the air. She noticed me looking and said, a little embarrassed, "It's one of the small bags. I put it on the regular time and forgot to take it out early..." I gave my condolences and left the lounge.
No sooner did I unlock my door than the fire alarm went off.
Yes, you heard me right. A bag of popcorn set off the fire alarm. So of course we all needed to leave the dorm. Never mind that there's no fire. Never mind that it's freezing out. I waited for my roommate and then we left together. Some people went to the track field where we are SUPPOSED to go when the fire alarm goes off, and some people went to another dorm where it was nice and warm. I of course went to the track field. After five or ten minutes, security opened a nearby classroom, and we rushed inside to escape the cold.
It took FOREVER for the fire department to show up, and I'm not sure they ever actually did. They are only 500 feet away, so this is very concerning. If there had been a real fire, then all whole dorm would have burned down. Someone said if it was real then our whole campus would be in flames. One of the boys' dorms has the fire alarm go off nearly every night, if the rumors can be believed. Or maybe it's just once a week or so. Still, I wonder if that played into why it took so long for the fire department to come.
I ate my candy bar while I waited. I was going to have it with pop, but I couldn't wait. It wasn't that great. Just so-so. Maybe it would have been better if I wasn't cold and irritated.
We finally got to go inside, but our whole floor smelled like burnt popcorn. Not very pleasant. But the fire alarm going off made the night interesting. And this time I do mean interesting.
