So good news, we won the House!
Bad news, it was WAY too close.
Worse news, this doesn’t bode well for kicking out Trump.
It is really difficult to elect out a sitting president. Whether it’s just a feeling of comfort with a familiar figure or party loyalty at its worst, it’s relatively rare for a current president to lose reelection. There are only about 9 presidents who ran for another term, but lost. The last time this happened was in 1993, with George Bush Sr.
And yes, we gained back a lot of seats in the midterm.. But that actually isn’t all that rare. The midterm after Obama took office, 2010, saw a huge rise in Republican seats in the house and senate and they ultimately gained majority in the house. Despite this, Obama still won reelection.
I am not saying this to scare anyone, this is just a reminder: We can’t be complacent. This midterm wasn’t the groundswell that some of us were hoping for. There was no huge blue wave. It was a tight race where gerrymandering and cheating from the right won them important districts.
Which is why we have to fight NOW.
We have to highlight areas of gerrymandering and voter suppression. We need to push to have these addressed. We need to make sure that in 2020, everyone gets their voices heard. And, just as importantly, we need to make sure everyone votes Mark it on your calendar. Make sure you don’t forget.
Do not rely on Mueller or justice. While those are amazing options and seeing Trump rotting in jail would be FANTASTIC, we need to take this into our own hands.
Fight for our rights, before the right takes them away.
