Staying at a local boutique hotel gives me a different staycation experience as compared to other big international hotel chains. These boutique hotels offer more quiet and serene surroundings, with its smaller space and facilities, and sometimes you really just want to relax alone with your thoughts and be by yourself.
Midas Hotel and Casino is one such hotel located along the busy corner of Roxas Boulevard and EDSA in Pasay City. While the outside world may be full of traffic and busy commuters, once you step inside Midas Hotel you will immediately feel a sense of comfort and serenity brought about by its luxurious decor and designer amenities. This hotel was previously the Hyatt Regency which was eventually renovated and transformed into Midas Hotel, although I think I’m too young to remember that hotel.
The 2702 Lobby Lounge welcomes you as you enter the hotel. It boasts a wide selection of liquors and cocktails, and has Happy Hour and Cocktail All You Can offerings, perfect for long-playing catch-ups with friends and colleagues.
Each room at Midas Hotel rates high in comfort and luxury. They showcase inviting hues and sophisticated decor, which allow you to indulge stylishly in cosmopolitan pleasures. The motifs at the 36 square meter Executive Room where I stayed at are simple and tastefully executed, playing up warm earth colors and displaying a classic royal elegance.
There are modern accents that punctuate the luxurious ambiance, such as the iconic ghost chair by Philippe Starck and a huge, mirrored panel that slides to reveal the flat-screen TV. a fully stocked mini bar with coffee and tea making facilities are also provided, as well as free high-speed wifi anywhere you are in the hotel.
My Executive Room opens up to a veranda with a view of the Manila skyline and a glimpse of the Manila Bay sunset.
Bulgari bath toiletries can also be found inside the bathroom as well as these cute Midas Hotel toiletries with different quotes and phrases to brighten up your day.
One thing missing from Midas Hotel and Casino that I was looking for is a swimming pool, so you can just soak up in the luxurious bathtub all afternoon if you want. But I had not had my lunch yet so I better go down to the cafe for my bountiful lunch buffet.
Midas Hotel is also a premium destination for dining. Midas Cafe offers everything from Western cuisines to classic Filipino dishes with a modern twist. The cafe offers a buffet spread for breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as a la carte items. It garnered a citation as among Asia Tatler Dining’s best restaurants of 2012
Some of the interesting dishes at the lunch buffet were the Lamb Osso Bucco (top left), Crab with Alavar Sauce (top right), and the Baked Salmon (bottom) which was tender and quite flavorful.
They also have a Make Your Own Noodle station where you can mix together your own ingredients for your noodles and have it prepared and cooked at the counter.
Other dishes include Roast Chicken, Beef Tapa, Chicken Curry, and Corn Siomai. However, these items were just okay and nothing really extraordinary.
My big favorite for that afternoon was the grilled lobsters which you can pick out from their seafood display and send to the grilling station to be prepared to your liking.
Grilled lobsters and baked oysters make for a perfect seafood combination!
There are also other grilled meats and items to choose from like Pork Belly, Beef Kebabs, and Seafood Skewers.
Another favorite of course is their Prime Rib Steak which you can get at the Carving Station. The selection of items at Midas Cafe may not be as big as other luxury buffets but I am satisfied with having steak and lobsters any day.
The dessert station is filled with sweets, fruits, chocolate, cakes, halo-halo, ice cream, and others. You can also have them prepare your choice of crepes which they will bring to your table. Overall, the lunch buffet at Midas Cafe was satisfying and took care of my hungry appetite.
I kept bumping into this cute black dog all around the hotel and I just had to keep petting him whenever I see him. I just love dogs and I really want to have one of my own if only I could.
Guests billeted at the Executive Floors enjoy exclusive access to the Sunset Lounge on the 9th Floor. The Club Lounge provides a complimentary spread of gourmet snacks and hors d’oeuvres, and choice drinks from 4pm to 8pm daily. The lounge gives you a direct and majestic view of the Manila Bay sunset so it is really advised to drop by here during sunset.
You can have your light evening cocktails here before you head off into the night. An assortment of snacks and pica pica items are on display at the buffet table for lounge guests. Other hotel guests that are not staying at the Executive floors can also partake of the lounge offerings for P500 per person.
I’m not sure why the Sunset Lounge is only open from 4pm to 8pm unlike other hotel club lounges which are open the entire day. It would have been better if guests can have their morning coffee and afternoon snacks here as well.
The hotel also has a room converted into a small fitness gym where you can have light workouts.
In the evening, you can also look forward to sinking into a relaxed groove with live music entertainment every Friday and Saturday at the 2702 Lobby Lounge. Or you can just play in the casinos which are located on the ground floor.
In the morning, you are greeted with a buffet breakfast at the Midas Cafe.
The buffet includes mostly basic Filipino breakfast items like corned beef, bacon, adobo, and fried bangus. There is nothing really that special with their breakfast but it is good enough to start my day.
Juices, fresh milk, soya milk, and chocolate drinks are also included as well as fruits and yogurts. I was happier with their dessert items like cupcakes, donuts, waffles, and pancakes which can be requested and prepared per your order. Midas Hotel and Casino is always a good alternative staycation hotel when you get tired of all those other big crowded places, even if you do not enter the casino at all. You can be assured of having a relaxing stay with a medley of dining options to choose from, including their award-winning Japanese restaurant, Yanagi, which I will be featuring on my next blog post.
