Lee was born in Upland, Texas, a small town that no longer exists, in Upton County. Her family moved to Fort Worth, Texas in 1929. She attended Texas Christian University while studying at the Fort Worth School of Fine Arts under Wade Jolly, Blanche McVeigh, and Evaline Sellors. After the WWII, she attended the Art Students League in New York City under the GI bill. She continued her art training at the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center and the Art Institute of Chicago. She painted and worked at the New York City Telephone Company for 30 years, returning to Fort Worth in 1974. She was divorced from Francis Lee in 1983. She continued working as an artist into the mid 1980's. This work was painted in New York City six years before Lee returned to Fort Worth, Texas.
