Middlemore cases spur call for national plan to combat resistance
In April last year, Dr Freeman co-authored a paper in the New Zealand Medical Journal calling for a national response plan to the “clear and present danger” of carbapenem-resistant organisms. “These are common causes of infections – bugs we see every day in hospitals, but they are resistant to just …

Dee Wallace: Knitting Champ!
Telecom people do some great work in the community and this week we tip our (woollen) hats to Dee Wallace.
While many of us are at home lazing about on the couch after work, Airedale Street's Dee Wallace is hard at work knitting baby hats for premature babies at Middlemore Hospital and Starship.
Dee says she can knit one hat per night while watching the TV and she reckons she probably knits about 200 hats per year, "I usually have a break at Christmas when it's a bit hot to knit" says Dee.
Dee was told about the premature babies at Middlemore hospital many years ago and starting knitting for them, then a friend at Starship told her about their need for little hats so now she alternates between the two hospitals.
"I wanted to help both these hospitals and have heard that they are delighted with what I do for them" says Dee.
Last year the Telecom Foundation hosted a knit-a-thon in their front room (which Dee participated in) and this year the Foundation is planning on doing the same! More on that soon.
Well done Dee, the babies are going to look very cute in their colourful wee hats!
For more on the Telecom Foundation, check out the website, blog, Facebook and Twitter.
