How I Killed a Fashion Trend in Middle School
So, many years ago when I still was a sassy little boy, a trend was coming up in my middle school. For some reason, in the early 2000's MTV informed a number of trends from fashion, music, art, etc. At the time in my small town of Summerland, British Columbia, Canada, if you had basic cable you had Much Music, the sad Canadian equivelant but it got the MTV newsfeed. The 90′s and early 2000′s will go down as two decades with the worst trends. One of these was having a pacifier clipped (so you didn't lose it) to you. A lot of clubbers wore these and had them because they were so high on drugs, they would stim by chewing on them.
So, a couple of the “cool girls” in my school were wearing them and some of them were even sucking on them.
12-13 year old me was NOT having it! I sauntered up to my locker mate and said as loudly and as obnoxiously as I could, “Have you seen people with the baby pacifiers? Doesn’t that look so DUMB?!” Ok, admittedly that was mean. For all I knew they needed something to cope with the struggles of being cool. I’ll be honest when I say, “I didn’t give a fuck!” I made sure a number of these mindless lemmings were in ear shot. I never teased them just expressed their choice in trend was dumb. Moral of the story is, don’t follow the trend on tv. Yesterday was drug induced chewing on a pacifier, today will be overuse of glitter! Kill a trend, bitches!
