“I taught English at Midwood in the spring of 1973 and they gave me five sophomore English classes...and by the time I got to my fifth class of the day, I could do the class in twenty minutes, so one of the students said, ‘Why don’t we have spelling bees?’ So we used to have spelling bees after we finished the class.”

HOWARD SELIGMAN
“And so I discovered the real roots of the blues, ‘cause at the time, you know, we had Jimi Hendrix and Cream and The Who, all these people who were playing what was actually based on Mississippi Delta blues or Chicago blues, but we didn’t know that it was necessarily coming from white guys who had gotten to play with Chicago blues or Mississippi Delta blues guys.”

“My Brooklyn story really goes back a long, long ways, as I mentioned to you. My father was born and raised in Brooklyn, in fact he grew up on a farm. My grandparents had a farm in Brooklyn. The address was technically on Sheffield Avenue, but it was bounded by Pennsylvania Avenue and Flatlands Avenue.”

“Midwood SING! Can you explain it?”
“It was actually originated here in 1941 I believe, by a teacher named Bella Tillis, who was before our time, by the way, just to clarify. It’s a totally student-run production, where the students create the script, write lyrics to famous songs that they select, get a band together, play the music, put on a production, choreography, costumes, build the fantastic sets, and it’s all student produced.”

ANDREW CHERTOFF
“The rules of dating were universal. I mean, you saw it, kind of, on Grease, which took place in that era, maybe a little bit before, but there were certain rules and one of them that I always remember is, you had to call...only boys asked girls on dates, it wasn’t the other way around. The girls wouldn’t ask somebody out...but you had to ask her by Wednesday night.”
