It was the last outcome he’d expected when he sauntered over to Annie and Mikasa while they were mid-conversation over their characteristically bland supper. He loomed over them, and they exchanged the usual banter – a little teasing, a little flexing, a little obligatory flirting, only to be met with a roll of glacial blue eyes from the unimpressed petite blonde. Mikasa, on the other hand, stood up. “You’re all talk and no walk,” she had accused him in a disinterested voice. “Why don’t you meet me at the stables and show me what you’re really made of.” And then, the raven-haired girl took her bowl and her tankard and walked away unceremoniously, leaving Reiner gawking at her and Annie wearing a wry smirk.
As every cadet knew, when a comrade invited you to the “stables,” they weren’t referring to the large barn where the horses and tack were all housed. They were referring to the abandoned shed-like structure that was once used as a stable, until the stalls were demolished when they were overcome with rot. This building of sorts was now used primarily for storage of additional tack, as well as surplus hay and grains up in the loft. It was also infamous as a place of romantic rendezvous amongst the trainees. It was so notorious, in fact, that it had become part of the jargon around the cadet camp; for instance, if two soldiers were squabbling, one of their peers might jokingly suggest that they “take a trip to the stables to sort things out.” To put it lightly, it wasn’t a place where mere friends met up for innocent conversation.
And Mikasa wanted to meet him there.
Curious – and, quite frankly, a little horrified – Reiner finished his meal and made his way out of the mess hall and into the cool swathe of twilight. He steps fell slowly against the grass as he sauntered across camp, between the barracks, and to the southern end, where the scandalous stable loomed, solitary and forsaken, in the dark. The burly blond hesitated outside of the oaken door. And then, he twisted his face resolutely, and shoved his way inside, only to be greeted with the strong musty aroma of hay and a thick silence.
There was no one there.
