☕️ + Star Wars!

Oh how I wish I only had one opinion about Star Wars 😭

Here's something I'm not sure I've fully articulated before, though: Disney Star Wars has severe Marvelitis and it's going to choke the franchise the same way it choked the MCU.

To be clear, I'm not knocking the shared universe, I love the shared universe. Most of the fiction that has gone past "fun" and into "rewrote my brain chemistry" over the years has been shared universe fiction. There's something incredibly powerful about picking up a story and reading a passing reference to That One Thing and knowing that That One Thing is real, you could go find it and learn all the details if you want. There's something incredibly powerful about knowing that the main characters you're reading about are only the main characters of this story, they are not the main characters of their whole world, things will happen outside of them that affect them that they can do nothing about, that just like the actual real world, more has happened and will happen than any human could track. Star Wars is fucking fantastic for this, it has multiple eras, it has novels and comics and video games, it is fundamentally impossible for any but the most obsessed fans to have experienced even a fraction of it. It makes the setting feel wide and strange and lifelike in a way that most auteur fiction cannot accomplish (this is probably a major contributor to my Tolkien obsession, because he's the rare freak that kinda could).

But such a huge part of why that works is that those stories are happening separately. The first Crisis Crossover is cool. The tenth is fucking annoying and you just want to see your hero finish their own goddamn current character arc without getting buried in cameos or sidetracked by some universe-ending bullshit. Mando was a fun, interesting show until it turned from "a space Western on the fringe of civilization" into "simultaneous new season of every other Star Wars property Filoni has ever touched," y'know? The refusal to go new places without making a huge incestuous knot of old things to overshadow them makes the universe smaller instead of bigger and I wish they'd quit.

☕️ DC character you usually Don’t Talk About

I don't think anything DC will ever do with Jaime Reyes will be better than the original Giffen/Rogers run.

Like I'm still a little salty that it was super important that he meet ~Superman~ and ~Batman~ but who gives a shit about Diana, if only because that was basically the height of DC pretending to take the Trinity seriously as a concept, but even with that, I do think that run is basically the perfect modern comic, for a lot of reasons, which I will not get sidetracked getting into, but the number one is just Jaime himself. At a time when Johns was making every teen superhero into a sullen asshole embroiled in an inexplicable and tedious game of Red vs Blue, Jaime was a sincere, loving kid who saved lives every month. He's so earnest and good that he convinced an evil alien parasite bug to go native, his One Ring dream is to become a dentist and put his sister through college, he sobbed in his father's arms when he only saved most of the people who would otherwise have died a horrifying death in a flood. His best friends are an idiot and the smartest girl he's met and his girlfriend could kick his ass. He treats Guy Garner with exactly the correct amount of respect, confusion, and disinterest. He's profoundly human but never once in a way that feels cynical or obnoxious or compromises the inherent idealism of the genre. I fucking love this little dude.

And he's also very normal by superhero standards - he's a boy, he's a legacy hero, he's got very understandable powers, I suppose he is brown but it is the kind of brown that is very easy for writers and audiences to ignore - so I do not understand why he seems to be just as bad as Cass in terms of "nobody but his literal creators are capable of writing him a way that doesn't feel like a miss at best, and more likely profoundly insulting."

(Admittedly I haven't read a DC comic other than Absolute Wondy in like a decade and multiple Crisis events so maybe he's finally gotten a decent new run somewhere. I hope so, he deserves it, but I'm skeptical.)

does your system relate strongly to any particular aesthetic, or any motifs? how does this differ between alters?

for the most part we are unified in motifs, just in our own ways. we all relate pretty strongly to rabbits. many of us also relate to occult/witchcraft aesthetics (particular three, august, and fox.) does anyone in the system have absolutely dogshit taste? be that in books, tv, music, non-media interests, or anything else that comes to mind!

general consensus is that my taste is shit. apparently scrolling through vintage advertisements for hours is boring. personally i think august's tastes in media is unfortunate.

how do you see your alters? are you parts of a single whole, are they your companions, weird roommates, or something else entirely?

we are parts of a single whole while also being our own separate people.

is there anyone in the system you’re particularly grateful for at the moment?

fox and martin particularly because they do not use social media and less screen time is good for us

i just answered both of these lol 😭 but ill talk about them a bit more anyway 💾 jack could also actually be the villain imo like i know in screen he's generally shown to be compassionate but he's also like weirdly obsessed with death and violence and his time in the army and is consistently sleep deprived and constantly putting himself in dangerous situations. so i can see him being the bad guy too. and sasha is the type of guy to want to stay out of situation but keeps getting pulled in against his will. he could be jacks unknowning right hand man...... 📧 okay its kinda cringe but like... career swap. like the cliche tattoo shop x flower shop type (jack would own the flower shop)

is there a AU that is less popular that you'd want to make for your s/i and f/o one day? (Ex. Irl x sentient character on a screen /think of electric dreams/ , specific role swap , different fandom au) i would LOVE to explore a med school au with jack and sasha. its a little hard bc their age gap is somewhat important to some of the lore in their relationship but i do think it would be really fun. maybe like professor student or something like that would work too idk. role swap could be super interesting to though actually!!
