When Tony attended Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida during the early-1950s, one of his classmates and friends was Fred Rogers (of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood fame). Fred later recalled how much Tony loved playing the piano and how grateful he was whenever Rogers let him borrow his piano to practice on. Below is a video of Tony on The Mike Douglas Show on January 5th, 1967 (not 1966 as the title screen says) broadcast in syndication from Cleveland, Ohio playing the piano on American television for the first time (cued to that portion when the video is played). Academy Award winning actress Joan Fontaine also appears as Mike's co-host that week and banters with Mike and Tony if played from the beginning. Perkins and Fontaine starred together on Broadway in the summer of 1954 when they took over the lead roles in the play Tea and Sympathy from Deborah Kerr and John Kerr (who also starred in the screen version in 1956). The play was Tony's Broadway debut after studying theater and appearing in productions while at Rollins College.
