HOND 30TH ANNIVERSARY WEEK day eight: free day
Disney keeps revisiting its films - Hunchback deserves a full stage run too
With Disney revisiting so many of its films lately, I keep thinking about The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
The stage musical has never had a full Broadway or West End run, yet it’s one of the most powerful things Disney has ever adapted - not just visually, but in what it says:
“What makes a monster and what makes a man?”
“The world is cruel, the world is ugly. But there are times, and there are people, when the world is not.”
It’s a story about empathy, and it's something more people should be able to experience.
I know a petition won’t make it happen on its own, but I started one just to see if there’s still interest: https://c.org/jpGTYgryYW
Little Shop of Horrors (1986) dir. Frank Oz
So there’s my favourite Galavant song ever now 😂 too bad it’s not in the show (it’s a demo)
“The song was so wildly risqué that it would have included a whopping 57 bleeps, so the network put the kibosh on the tune before the cast could make a proper recording.
The central gag is that Gareth and Madalena are trying to pick a fight with the bar patrons, but they're so terrified of the king and queen that they just one-up the insults to their own mothers” (c) wiki
Lyrics
Since watching the recent Sideways video discussing Hellfire and the music of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, I've come to fully appreciate the musical choices made in this moment.
The "locked away" leitmotif is included, which emphasizes Quasimodo's anxiety when the little girl approaches him. Even though Frollo is gone, his harsh teachings still linger in his head, and he fears that the people will still revile him. But when the girl goes to hug him, the music transitions into "Out There", and Quasimodo is overcome with relief knowing that he finally gained what he wanted all along: being accepted for who he is and the freedom to go out into the world.
This movie is Alan Menken's magnum opus.
