 October 7th - The Shade

 The individual known as The Shade is a near immortal being who possesses total control over a shadow-based form of magic. He can cast broad, blinding swaths of shadow, use shadows to facilitate teleportation, and create constructs and creatures out of a tangible shadowy substance. The entirety of the Shade’s origins remain untold, but at one point he was known as a man named Richard Swift who lived in London in the early half of the 19th century. Although he considered himself neither hero nor villain, Swift found himself on numerous occasions ruthlessly battling a group of murderers and practitioners of black magic. To this end he made an emery of a powerful mage known as Simon Culp. He assisted England during the Second World War. During The War, Swift engaged in what seemed to be a final battle with Culp. Culp was apparently killed; although it was later revealed that it was only Culp’s body that was destroyed and a portion of his mind had infected Swift, exerting a subtle influence over his actions. Following The War, Swift relocated to America. Influenced by Culp, Swift became the super villain known as ‘The Shade’ and had numerous confrontations with The Flash (Jay Garrick), Star Man (Ted Knight) and others. He later became a member of The Injustice Society and some time thereafter battles the second Flash (Barry Allen). The Shade ultimately becomes aware of Culp’s influence over him. With the aide of the new Star Man (Jack Knight), The Shade was finally able to expel and destroy Culp’s essence. The Shade features in an episode of The Flash television series portrayed by actor Mike McLeod. The Shade first appeared in the pages of Flash Comics #33.

What kind of masculine entitlement and arrogance enabled a group of young male athletes to pursue being sexually serviced by a young woman they described as acting “crazy” and “weird”?

What led them to think it acceptable to urge each other to “spit on it,” (note the objectifying language) and to slap her on the behind so hard it “looked like it hurt” (something Justice Carroccia inexplicably described as “foreplay”).

Yet they persisted, even trying to bring more hockey players into the room. One of the men felt the need to make the so-called, after-the-fact “consent videos” for “cover.” And their text messages suggest they conspired to align their stories once they learned they were being investigated.
