Framing
I'm feeling nostalgic and flipping through to see what's streaming. Finding Forrester is on IMDB's app, which means commercials, but I love the movie so accept it. Gotta understand, I haven't watched this movie since high school, so I don't remember much except the big moment stuff.
Anyway, the shot just before getting introduced to Jamal is of a stack of books. His mother later references all these books she sees him reading that she never did. Pause that moment and check out the titles. They're mostly white authors, European or American, and a bunch of stuff from one Japanese writer.
Now, in case you don't remember, the movie is set in New York. So, there's this very intelligent kid who is reading and writing stuff like he's breathing. He's reading fiction, history, and philosophy. He's talented enough to get a scholarship as some private Manhattan academy. Yet, somehow, the only shit he keeps on a stack by his bed are all the shit white English literature college professors jerk off to?
Are they really trying to sell the reality that Jamal has grown up in New York city and hasn't kept a copy of anything that might, I dunno, speak more to his life experience? Jamal is supposed to be 16 years old, his literature teacher knows he's talented. Has she never tried introducing him to black authors who got their starts in New York too?
Like, I adore Sean Connery in this movie like anyone, but the framing makes shit even worse. Jamal is already framed as admiring a bunch of, frankly, narrow white authors. The story advances through the lense of Jamal inexplicably craving approval from another white asshole.
I still love this movie, but it reads like a white guy making a statement on race and not about the character of Jamal Walace.
6.5/10
