'are you insane?! you need a cat scan, or something!' @nancewheelr.
he doesn't mean to cry. he didn't ask for tears to spill from exhausted eyes. nor did he want his sister to see him in a shape such as this one. the moment mike sees nancy approach, he turns his head, hugging his legs tighter, trying to make himself small. 'if you're happy in your dreams... does that count?' words are quiet. they might not even make sense, but mike speaks them, anyway, accompanied by a sniffling behind his arms. @nancewheelr.
The Face of Fear & Other Stories by Michael Whitehouse
Greetings intrepid readers. Before Halloween raises its wide pumpkin-headed grin to us all once again, you will have a copy of my stories in your possession. Over the past few months I have mentioned that my collection Frozen Nightmares is nearly ready, and it is. But what I hadn't told anyone was that I intended to release a second collection alongside it as a surprise. As is often the way with the writing process, the unanticipated hides around each corner and so one collection was finished before the other. For that reason, it will not be Frozen Nightmares which will be released before Halloween, it will be The Face of Fear.
I believe a short story collection is best served when it has a theme at its heart (in this case a rotten core). The Face of Fear deals with different incarnations of dread, of the evil which lurks just out of sight, whether in the hearts of people or in the darkness nearby. That is what this collection explores, fear itself in all of its forms. Some of the stories you may recognise, but not in this form. These are some of my darkest tales and have each been rewritten and tweaked throughout the years, not to mention the addition of the previously unpublished Face of Fear, which I think a few of you may enjoy quite a bit. Fear is a strange thing, it simultaneously hounds us and yet makes us what we are. How we think, how we act, the decisions we take - all of these are informed by our own fears, what scares us when the lights go out and we are left alone with nothing but our thoughts for morbid company. And yet, there's a hope in fear itself, you can only be frightened if you have people and things in your life worth holding on to - that is something worth considering. I hope you will all come with me on this journey into the abyss, where a man delves deep into the tunnels of Amsterdam to test his courage, where another enlists the help of his neighbour to deal with an unknown force in his house, where a young child fights to conquer his fear of heights by climbing onto the roof of an abandoned building, and where a man retreats to a log cabin to recover from a heart attack, only to be hounded by something creeping through the woods. Come with me, and stare into The Face of Fear. "By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes..." ~ Mike
