April 7: Jake Lamb

I know RBI are out of fashion these days, but 7 through 5 plate appearances is still something worth noting. Diamondbacks rookie thirdbaseman Jake Lamb didn’t start Opening Day, but came off the bench for a three-run double, then followed it up on day 2 with an RBI groundout and a three run homer. At 24 years and 6 months old, this makes him the third youngest player in history (well since 1914, as far back as baseballreference.com’s play index goes) to record at least 3 RBI in each of his teams first 2 games. Mike Marshall did it for the 1984 Dodgers at about 24 years and 3 months and in 2013 Freddie Freeman did it at just 23. 

The difference is Marshall and Freeman had 10 and 8 plate appearances, respectively. Who knows what this means for Lamb, he’s been lucky so far to have 7 baserunners on in his 5 plate appearances, but he has managed to drive in 6 of them (plus himself on the homer) and no matter how you feel about the RBI as a stat that is pretty cool to see.
