Justice here was swift and brutal, but fair and by the books. The worst part is the very idiocy that the Secret Fleet's ideals were founded on would have been the entire fleet's downfall in time. Of course, far too late had things taken their due course.

You are correct. Living on ships, where one of the most basic rights is a safe deck underfoot, can give you a jaundiced view of ones who were plotting to destroy the safe decks you are standing on.

Even had the Secret Fleet won, you are still correct. Their failure over time remains inevitable.

Almost a shame what happened. I'm sure there are a fair number of men and women on those ships that felt powerless to do anything about what was happening..

Mostly true. A big however is lurking in there. Even deck hands or rigging rats could have followed Naral fleet Laws and reported the criminal activity of the Secret Fleet. They were punished fairly lightly for their failure to follow the laws.

Their collective silence is what made the battle necessary. The ships could have been taken at a Gathering with little or no losses.

Carlin's catapult information changed that plan and created the emergency with its necessity for battle to save the fleet from a civil war.

The "splinters buried deep" I can actually feel because I experience something similar once every few years.

When I was young, I slipped and fell on a patch of ice and slammed my cheekbone onto the ground. The bone wasn't broken, but had cracked pretty badly. Over time it healed on its own but not fully. Where the two places meet, the bone did not heel evenly and every now and then a tiny splinter-like shard of bone will break off and work its way to the surface. The pain is excruciating when it's finally ready to come out, but such a relief when it's over.

Ouch! I feel for you, my friend. My experience, which is second hand, is dealing with porcupine quills.

My dear old Kobe, an otherwise intelligent mutt, caught porcupines, not once, but THREE times!

Each time, it was knock him out with ether and pull all the quills I could with pliers. Over the next few weeks, I would continue to find and pull quills that had been fully buried and worked to the surface, right through the bones of his snout and jaw.

Also, out of curiosity. I know that fishing is serious business on these ships, done with net and spear mostly. However, do any fish for relaxation, such as with hook and line? Just something to relieve a little stress and maybe make a nice meal later?

So true. The catapults of the Secret Fleet, thanks to some "talented forgers", were not very good weapons. In particular, they couldn't fire up for better range.

And yes, especially younger ones, often fish for pleasure and to put something different on their dinner plate.

Such fishing is usually done from raft side at gatherings. Safe shallows and high levels of activities tend to keep dangerous predators away and many sorts of smaller fish like sheltering under the rafts.

Why do I get the feeling that when the Secret Fleet tries to fire those war catapults, they are in for a real disaster?

A torsion bow catapult is a pretty basic. One for ship to ship warfare does need certain features. It is those that are not so obvious but are necessary for battle that were tampered with.

As was said, "Some of those catapults of theirs might actually work."
