“I know what a will is.” Had it been anyone else in front of her, Miki would have kept the bite in her tone. The paper in her hands creased short of tearing between tight fingers. “I just---” Miki frowned at his back and back down at the document in her hands. There hadn’t been the usual defeat or hopelessness in his voice she associated with workers or customers visiting her a final time. Resignation had been there, but to the inevitability of the future rather than an imminent dead end.
“It is just...very sudden, is all.”
She supposed the running of an estate was none too different than the overseeing of the pleasure house. People accomplishing jobs they knew how to do. Coming to her should a problem in need of a decision arise. If she didn’t have the skills needed, she could say goodbye forever to her dream of owning a textiles shop.
“The...the major item, though,” Miki hedged addressing it directly, as if doing so would somehow make it come to pass. “I... If you believe me capable...”
She knew how to raise girls into prostitutes, not ladies that would rule a kingdom. But...
It was Hisahide. His pool of confidants was small already. It was hard to think he would trust anyone at all with the responsibility.
