✩ :Belief they’ve questioned/struggled with
It’s possible to say that Shikamaru is a person who has always been pretty sure of what he thinks and while he doesn’t mind bending to new ideas within reason, his ideas and beliefs remain consistent and he only questions them when someone challenges it, or someone challenges him to challenge it.
I personally don’t entirely believe Shikamaru is someone who struggles with ideals, other than those that are held by other people with evil intent in their mind (i.e, yeah, he’s probably going to continue to question Jashinism at random points in time).
You could say he’s in a continual struggle concerning the Will of Fire and the path to follow that belief; to stay alive and raise Asuma and Kurenai’s child when they’re born, and all of the other children within that generation.
After Asuma’s death, there was large speculation on the matter, a lot of thought put into his time over it. Would others help him accomplish the feat? Was there assurance that the future children would follow the way as well?
Yes and no - Shikamaru knew that others followed the Will of Fire and there was no doubt that they were already and had been guiding others to it gently, not as if it were a cult, but just as a way of life - a way of peace. However, that had no guarantee that some wouldn’t stray and disagree with the way. He knows that it’s inevitable for there to be dissension and perhaps total obliteration of the belief in order for a new way to take place of it - and you know what that means to him? It means preparing them to make those decisions when the time comes, and teaching them as much as possible for those decisions to be sound and right.
I COULD RLY SAY A LOT MORE BUT I JUST WOKE UP AND I CANT PUT IT INTO WORDS SO LET THIS BE ENOUGH
