Money or Reputation Story of the Montréal Canadiens - the ongoing issue with the Habs last season and this off-season, happens to be that NHLers seem to have been put off playing for Le Club. This is an issue that we have seen throughout the 2015-16 season, with such a notable case as Artemi Panarin, who went 30-47-77 in 80 games for the Blackhawks last season. his impressive 77 points helped the Left Wing take home the Calder Memorial Trophy for best rookie in the league over the span of the 2015-16 season and was voted to the NHL All Rookie Team, as well as posting an impressive 7 points in 7 games, during his first Stanley Cup Playoffs appearance. One can understand why, Panarin chose to stay with the Blackhawks, being another Original Six Team, and having won the Prestigious Cup 3 times since 2010. Imagine though, if Panarin had chosen the Montréal Canadiens, one can only dream ( this would have definitely helped in the scoring depth department. Other such cases, which have more recently surfaced, are Milan Lucic and David Perron. Although the Canadiens offered Lucic more than the $42 million contract which the Oilers had offered him, a wise move, as Le Club du Canadiens was competing with the fact that Lucic would have the opportunity to play alongside the future NHL All-Star Connor McDavid in Edmonton, this did not deter him from choosing this experience over money (fair enough - McDavid was amazing in his first NHL season last year, albeit a huge injury which kept him out for months). Perron however, chose money over the chance to play with the prestigious Montréal club, a club that he had grown up aspiring to play for. Should we have offered him more, would he be worth it, or would he have still chosen the St Louis Blues over the Habs? Could it all be down to our GM Marc Bergevin not offering the right amount of money to players that we are targeting, or could it be that the great club is losing it's prestige after continually trying to capture that elusive 25th Stanley Cup for the past 23 years. Whether it is Money or Reputation, it is clear that the Montréal Canadiens have lost out on some key players over the past few seasons that would have not only bolstered the lineup, but would have helped in the scoring depth department to make the team more of a key contender for Lord Stanley's Cup.
