“Well…” Clark had to think how to respond to that. If someone took advantage of his kindness and tried to take it out on him, he could usually fight back. Superpowers tended to help with that. But it was different for humans, and he tried to understand that. “It’s true. Not everyone is going to appreciate it. And some people might even take advantage of you for it. But that doesn’t mean it’s not the right thing to do. So many people are watching you, Alex. Just like me and Kara. People at the D.E.O. especially are looking up to you. They can see you set an example. You can change the way that entire operation runs. Just with kindness. It’s a powerful thing.”
“Maybe it is the right thing to do.” Alex sighed, sounding a little irritated. She didn’t appreciate Clark’s lectures. “It’s fine for you, with your.” There was a pause as Alex tried to find the correct words, hands spread out in front of her as she did so. “superpowers. You can afford to be kind. But me?” Alex placed a hand over her chest briefly. “The DEO? If we show kindness where kindness isn’t due, we look weak. We can’t afford that.” Alex shook her head. “We have - I - have people to protect, and I can’t do that if my enemies think that I’m weak.”
