Conclusion

Being a student in AFS 363 has opened my eyes to many more issues in media. Black people are constantly abused and misrepresented in the media, and because of this the same happens in real life. Often times we are stereotyped and only allowed to have a certain role in places like classrooms, work, or teams.

Although, I obviously think that the 90s were a time that Black people thrived, there were still issues, that included the stagnancy of role. Some actors were constantly casted as the “baby momma” or the “gang member”, not allowing any range for these individuals. This leads to Black people being forced to fit into a role that they most likely do not want to play, but have to because of money, living, or academic situations.

I would like to thank Professor Miletsky because he allowed for an open discussion classroom. I felt very comfortable expressing my opinions and thoughts, and it was to my pleasant surprise that I had a class full of people who agreed. I appreciated the fact that Professor Miletsky was not hesitant to correct the thinking of others, but always in a compassionate way. I learned a lot in this class and I never lost interest for a second. We were always encouraged to speak up and hearing the experiences of other and relating them to some of my own really built a sense of solidarity.

So I guess to sum it up, do not suffer in silence because someone is there to listen, take a class with Professor Miletsky, fight for representation in the Black community and for the preservation of Black lives. And if you haven’t figured it out already, the 90s were All That!
