Max learned from a young age that relationships aren’t what the tv tends to portray–couples holding hands, sneaking kisses whenever they can and once they take the ultimate plunge into marriage, it was a guaranteed happy ending.
All lies.
The relationship between his parents weren’t a happy one, it was a constant battlefield when he lived with his parents. More often than not, the bloodshed tend to spill onto the couple’s only son as a result. Neglect, beatings and just poor overall care. Max always heard his mother complain about his father, the man she married and moved to the Americas in order to escape the chaos that was their home country. She complained, cried even, and yet she stayed with the man.
She sometimes took her anger out on him, her own child, instead, since most of the time she tends to lose whenever she and her husband fought.
One time he openly asked why she stayed with his father despite all her complaints, but that just got him a slap to the face. After that, he never asked again.
Maybe that’s why he hates Zach so much, Mindy complains about him alot on the phone, he hears it even from his room. The complaints didn’t really last long, some of the time she would slowly transition from complaining on how he tends to be a jerk and then gushing on how cute he is with the freckles and whatever feature he has.
Zach doesn’t hang around much since he and Hagan, along with two of their cohorts, saved the world from being destroyed. Max enjoys the respite in between visits, because usually Mindy is much more bubblier than usual and very handsy from what glimpses he caught. Hagan tries to ignore it, but Max knew from the look on his face that he really couldn’t, instead focusing on helping whatever homework Max got from his school.
One of the rules that Hagan reinforced inside the house is that whenever Zach stayed over, he was to sleep in the guest room. He couldn’t go into Mindy’s room without some sort of supervision.
So imagine Max’s surprise–and utter glee–when he spotted the world-renown hero in his foster sister’s bed. Lazer arm just hanging off, a foot too, and his mouth hanging open with drool staining the pillow. Mindy was still asleep as well, as far he could see the second lump hidden under the blanket. A grin formed on his face, mischievous in nature, because this was too good to ignore.
The young boy took the risk of silently running back to his room in order to grab the phone that Hagan bought for him. He rarely used it, aside from using the wifi to watch videos on youtube. His delight instantly doubled when Zach was still there, Max brought up the camera function of the phone and with several taps on the screen, took photos of the sleeping teen.
Satisfied with what he got, Max then took a few steps closer and grabbed onto the Zach’s arm that hung over the edge of the bed. It took a few tugs with whatever strength the child had before the older teen started to slip over the edge.
The sound of a body hitting the floor echoed throughout the room and into the hallway, which was swiftly followed by a mixture of laughing and outright cursing.
Max quickly slipped out of the room, still laughing as he ran back towards his bedroom.
