On the approaches to Minceta Tower, a younger, more welcome visitor is dwarfed even by the stairs on Dubrovnik's colossal city walls. The present day visitor stands gazing through a window, which for centuries served past city guards and defenders who stood watch here. Dubrovnik was worldly and a center of commerce, but also fiercely independent. Its motto, "Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro", which translated from Latin means "Liberty is not well sold for all the gold," messaged others that it could not be bought or easily conquered.
