The Song Dynasty (960-1279) in China saw the introduction of using gunpowder militaristically, the introduction of the Zhanmadao and the publication of The Art of War . The Zhanmadao literally means horse (zhan) chopping (ma) sword (dho), and is said to have been between 125 and 130cm in length. #Repost @bilkgallery ・・・Opening tonight at 6pm - Body Politic. This is the first time the incredible collection of pieces by Melissa Cameron has been exhibited together. There are three major series to this exhibition, one of which is the Escalation series. 'The Escalation series is an imagined family tree of various weapons. Each branch is conceived as one historical continuum of a particular style of combat, for example how the tank superseded the cannon in both firepower and mobile intent, or in close combat, how the gun has become the most common personal defence over the once ubiquitous sword. In this way the Escalation series pits competing military technologies against one another in time, over the span of millennia, prompting questions of humanity’s continuing relations with itself.'
